Students at Upwey High School are a step closer to having the facilities they deserve, with the appointment of an architect to start work on plans for a major upgrade.

Member for Monbulk and Minister for Education James Merlino today visited the school to announce K2LD Architects will design the project.

It includes upgrading and modernising school buildings, additional basketball courts, a new performing arts centre and home for the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, and relocating the schools administration facilities.

The additional basketball courts will deliver a new home base for local clubs.

Detailed planning work is the first step towards future upgrades at Upwey High School, which is one of 35 Victorian schools to share in $12 million in the Victorian Budget 2016-17 to plan building works.

The Andrews Labor Government has invested a record $1.8 billion to build new schools and upgrade classrooms across the state in the Victorian Budget 2016/17.

The Labor Government is building the Education State so that every local student gets the opportunity for a great education and every community has access to a great school.
