Building The Education State In Carrum

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny today visited schools in Carrum where the Andrews Labor Government is funding building projects and giving children the best chance in life.

Mr Merlino visited Patterson River Secondary College which received $1 million in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget to fund the creation of a senior student hub that will house classrooms and other facilities like careers advice services used by years 11 and 12.

The school will also receive $736,349 in equity funding next year, up from $442,024 in 2015.

Earlier in the day, Mr Merlino and Ms Kilkenny also visited Seaford Primary School which will receive $126,585 in equity funding next year, up from $54,674 this year.

Mr Merlino and Ms Kilkenny kicked off their day of school visits at Seaford North Primary School, which will receive $68,138 in equity funding in 2016, up from $41,499 this year.

This increase in equity funding is part of the Labor Government’s Education State commitment to provide an extra $566 million to help schools and students most in need and break the cycle of disadvantage.

Altogether the Budget invests almost $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system – representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.

The Budget provides $325 million to renovate, refurbish or rebuild 67 schools. It will fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.

It also includes $180 million for programs that will help families cover the extra costs of education, like camps, excursions and uniforms, so no child misses out.
