Building The Education State In Ballarat

The Andrews Labor Government is refurbishing Delacombe Primary School and giving its students the best chance in life.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Wendouree Sharon Knight today visited the school to discuss the $2 million refurbishment, as part of a tour of schools and educational services across Ballarat.

The $2 million in funding, secured in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget, will be used to replace storm-damaged relocatables with permanent classrooms, a build a new toilet block and purpose-built outdoor learning space.

The Budget invests almost $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system – representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.

The Budget provides $325 million to renovate, refurbish or rebuild 67 schools. It will fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.

It also includes $180 million for programs that will help families cover the extra costs of education, like camps, excursions and uniforms, so no child misses out.

Prior to visiting Delacombe Primary, Mr Merlino kicked off the day in Ballarat with a visit to Yuille Park P-8 Community College, followed by a visit to the Ballarat Secondary College-run Young Parents Program.

Over the past seven years, the program – which operates out of the Delacombe Learning and Education Centre – has supported more than 100 young disadvantaged mothers complete their secondary education.  Last year, the program took out the Community and Families category at the prestigious Victorian Education Excellence Awards.

Mr Merlino also visited Ballarat High School and then rounded off his all-day tour with a visit to Ballarat Specialist School, where he also took time to see and learn about the school’s popular Early Learning Centre.
