New Wonthaggi Secondary College On Track

The new Wonthaggi Secondary College is set to open its doors to students in Term 1, 2020 thanks to the Andrews Labor Government, with the rebuild of the senior school well underway.

Minister for Education James Merlino today visited Wonthaggi Secondary College to tour the site of the new $32.7 million senior campus, which includes a complete rebuild of the school’s current facilities and a new local sports stadium.

During the visit, Mr Merlino also announced Bass Coast Shire will be given the site of the current campus when works are complete and the school moves their senior campus. The site will be used to create a cultural precinct and will include a gallery, library and convention centre.

The school’s previous sports and assemblies space – Webb’s Shed – will also be transformed into a community space.

The new senior campus will be located on a purpose-built site next to the Bass Coast Specialist School and will be a major step in achieving the community’s dream of a dedicated education and learning precinct.

It has been designed by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, with builders SJ Higgins appointed to construct it.

The new campus will feature a multi-sport stadium that will be shared with the community, including three competition-grade basketball courts.

Students and teachers will benefit from new outdoor learning areas, a central plaza, a library, and specialist facilities for visual arts, graphics, materials technology and science.

The Labor Government has delivered $31 million for the upgrade, with Bass Coast Shire Council contributing $1.7 million towards the costs of the new shared stadium.

This school building boom has delivered more than 1,300 school upgrades and 70 new school projects across the state, supporting more than 5,000 construction jobs for Victorians.
