Families in Belgrave can have peace of mind knowing local paramedics now have the facilities they need to respond to emergencies faster with the opening of a state-of-the-art ambulance branch.

Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino today officially opened the new $1.7 million ambulance station in Rutherford Road, Tecoma.

The modern purpose-built facility has three ambulance bays, four rest and recline areas, a training space, study area and meal preparation facility.

The 24-hour facility is home to 18 paramedics who rotate through ambulances attached to the branch. These hard-working paramedics now have the larger and modern facilities they deserve, and room to grow in the future.

The Andrews Labor Government is rebuilding Victoria’s ambulance system to ensure all community members get the care they need in a critical emergency.

Our $500 million plan will improve ambulance response times, employ 450 more paramedics, buy new vehicles and build more stations across the state. This investment, along with a further $26.5 million in the Victorian Budget 2017/18, is the largest funding boost ever delivered for Victoria’s ambulance services.

After 18 months of boosting and reforming the ambulance system, more and more ambulances are arriving at emergencies sooner.

Latest performance data shows 81.4 per cent of Code 1 ambulances are arriving within 15 minutes of call-out, compared with 76 per cent a year earlier and miles ahead of the 73.7 per cent from when the Liberals were last in government – it’s Victoria’s best Quarter Two in nine years.

In Yarra Ranges Shire, we are seeing significant improvement, with 73.9 per cent of ambulances now arriving within 15 minutes for Code One emergencies, up from 62.9 per cent compared to a year earlier.

The average time for an ambulance to reach the scene of a Code One emergency in Yarra Ranges over the same period has improved from 15:05 minutes to 12:41 minutes.

“This new state-of-the-art branch in Belgrave gives dedicated paramedics the modern and larger facilities they need to do what they do best, which is saving lives.”
