Building The Education State In Beaumaris
The Andrews Labor Government’s first Education State Budget is building a new stand-alone secondary college in Beaumaris.
Minister for Education, James Merlino, today visited the site for the new college – the current Beaumaris Campus of Sandringham Secondary College – to make the official announcement.
The $6.5 million funding, secured in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget, will be used for design and stage 1 building works of Beaumaris Secondary College.
Mr Merlino also used today’s visit to officially announce that $2 million of Budget funding will be used to modernise classrooms and facilities at Sandringham College’s Sandringham (Years 7-10) and Senior campuses.
In order to start this transformation of the Beaumaris campus of Sandringham College into the Beaumaris Secondary College, the campus will not be taking enrolments for 2016 as works get underway to develop this new school for the community.
The Beaumaris campus currently caters to Year 7 and Year 9 students. The Year 9 students at the Beaumaris campus will at the end this year transfer to Sandringham College’s Sandringham (Years 7-10) Campus at the end of this year, as will any Year 7 students enrolling for 2016.
The Budget invests close to $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system – it represents the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.
It provides $325 million to renovate, refurbish or rebuild 67 schools – 25 of them in our fast-growing outer suburbs and 21 in regional Victoria.
It includes $120 million to build and upgrade Catholic and Independent schools across the state, matching dollar-for-dollar the non-government sector’s contribution.
The Budget will also fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.
