Anything Is Possible For State School Students
After months of rehearsals, thousands of dance steps and hours of singing, the curtain goes up on the Victorian State Schools Spectacular today.
Opening the Spectacular today, Minister for Education James Merlino said the theme of “Anything is Possible” explored themes of creativity, freedom of expression and self-empowerment.
Mysterious boxes of imagination will bring dreams to life onto the Hisense Arena stage and an eight-metre-high CatBot puppet will make an appearance.
CatBot puppeteer students have learnt puppetry from renowned industry professionals from Airena who also created the giant puppet for King Kong the Musical.
The 2017 Spectacular features 3,000 Victorian students from more than 200 government schools in a musical extravaganza performing more than 40 songs.
This year’s principal cast also includes some rising stars of stage and screen:
- Australian representative of the 2017 Junior Eurovision Song Contest Isabella Clarke
- Award-winning Magician Tim Mason who has wowed audiences in Las Vegas
- Online vocal sensation Imogen Spendlove who was a finalist on The Voice Kids
- Yorta Yorta girl Lillie Walker who performed in Deborah Cheetham’s Pecan Summer.
The annual Schools Spectacular provides an invaluable performing arts opportunity for Victoria’s government school students, developing their creative skills, discipline, perseverance and confidence over months of rehearsals.
The Andrews Labor Government has set ambitious targets of more students reaching the highest level of achievement in the arts – ensuring kids are happy, healthy and resilient.
Participating primary and secondary school students work with industry professionals including Creative Director Neill Gladwin, Musical Director Chong Lim, Dance Director Deon Nuku, (Scooby Doo, Happy Feet, Moulin Rouge) and Associate Dancer Director Troy Phillips (King Kong the Musical, Moulin Rouge, Hairspray, The Boy from Oz).
